Robert and Frieda Wheatley

Robert and Frieda Wheatley were found strangled to death in the basement of their home on the 2600 block of North Holman Street Aug. 29, 1988, after their granddaughter became concerned and asked police to check on them.

Investigators believe the couple was robbed before they were killed as numerous items— including a TV, credit cards and their light green Buick Regal—were missing from the home. The credit cards were used extensively in Northeast, North and Downtown Portland before their bodies were discovered. The couple’s car was found abandoned at the Jantzen Beach Shopping Center, about five miles away from their home, a few days later.

Police believe that there are those out there who know what happened and hope someone will come forward.
