Joshua Jeffries was asleep in his bed early on the morning of Aug. 10, 2001, when a gunshot rang out on the 6500 block of SE 48th Avenue. A neighbor reported hearing a scream, a dog began barking and someone yelled out “Call 911!”
Police responding to the scene found the 11-year-old boy suffering from a single gunshot wound that would prove fatal. Jeffries had just finished the 6th grade at Lewis Elementary School and police were baffled as to who would target the young boy. Family members described him as a good kid, he’d never been in any trouble and investigators were unable to find anyone with any motive to hurt the boy.
